A banker convicted of murder spends decades inside Shawshank State Penitentiary and builds an unlikely friendship that outlasts the walls. It's adapted from a Stephen King novella. It did modest business in theaters and became a classic through cable and home video.

How it was made

  • Principal photography ran from June to August 1993, almost entirely in Mansfield, Ohio.
  • The Ohio State Reformatory stood in for the prison.
  • Deakins felt that not showing the outside of the prison added a sense of claustrophobia.
