A young girl is possessed by a demon, and two priests are called in to save her. William Peter Blatty adapted his own novel.

How it was made

  • The bedroom set was cooled to minus 20 degrees F with a refrigeration system so the actors' breath showed. The set lighting warmed it, so they could film only about three minutes at a time.
  • The MacNeil house interiors were built at CECO Studios in Manhattan. The Iraq dig scenes were shot at Hatra, limited to dawn and dusk because of the heat.
  • For a stairwell tracking shot, Roizman rode a floating platform built by the key grip. An electric hoist and pulley system raised it through the stairwell, pacing the actors as they climbed.
