After a divorce, an out-of-work actor poses as an elderly British nanny to spend time with his kids. Robin Williams plays both roles, and a lot of the film depends on how much he improvised.

How it was made

• Columbus ran multiple cameras at once, like a documentary, to catch reactions to improvised material.
• The Painted Lady house on Steiner Street was used for exteriors. All interiors were built on a converted warehouse soundstage.
• Applying the Doubtfire makeup took four hours.
